A Podium and a Top 10 Finish at Sunset Speedway Give Alex Tagliani Third Place in the Driver's Championship
In the first race, a 41.66 miles event, the Frontline Worker 125 was run under yellow flag situations eight times. A red flag situation, caused by rain, forced the drivers to return to their pit for nearly three hours after only seven of the 125 laps. Tagliani, who had qualified eight earlier that afternoon, was running fifth before the interruption, At the restart, as the sun was setting down around 8 p.m., the driver of the #18 Chevrolet Camaro RONA - VIAGRA - St-Hubert kept in touch with the leaders until lap 110 when he started to move up the field near the end of the race to finish third behind winner Raphael Lessard and Andrew Ranger.
"Team TAG Motorsport - 22 Racing had great results at Sunset Speedway were I finished third in the in the first race," explained Alex Tagliani. "In the second event, we were on the way to another good results, maybe a better one than the first race because the car was running great. I was fighting for a second place finish, but unfortunately the car suffered a slight mechanical problem, which made it difficult to defend my position. That situation occurred after I touched the wall and my #18 Chevrolet Camaro RONA - VIAGRA - St-Hubert began to oversteer. It's too bad because we could have picked up two great results. Anyway, the team comes out of it real well by scoring enough points for third place in the championship race."
Since the stoppage of the first race kept the drivers off the track for a long period, the second round of the day, the General Tire 125, started much later in the evening after a 30-minute time allotment following the completion of race 1 to prepare for the second event of the day. Starting fifth, Alex Tagliani kept in touch with leaders throughout the race, avoiding contacts as he did in the first race, but unfortunately he could not avoid scrubbing the wall before slipping to ninth position at the finish. A late yellow flag caution on lap 121 pushed the race into overtime until lap 130. Unfortunately, there was not enough time left for the driver of the TAG Motorsport-22 Racing Team driver to launch a come back.
"What is great coming out of this race is that the team did a super job over the winter months to improve the car stability. Over the last few years, the car always performed well on road courses, but we always had slight problems on oval tracks. Following Sunday's results, I think that the work accomplished by Team 22 Racing members is paying off. Right now, everything looks great so far in our quest for the championship," concluded Tagliani.
Next race on the NASCAR Pinty's Series agenda will be held Sunday August 15 at the annual Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. The Grand Prix will be broadcast live on the RDS2 French station at 2:18 p.m. and the following Sunday on TSN at 1:00 p.m.
